Dr. Jane Goodall
In 1991, Dr Jane Goodall gathered a group of inspired students around a kitchen table in Tanzania.
That small meeting became Roots & Shoots — now a global movement spanning over a hundred countries and empowering young people to lead change for people, animals, and the environment.
It’s Jane’s living legacy — a movement of hope in action.
Roots & Shoots aims to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, animals, and the environment.
These steps have been honed over more than two decades of working with hundreds of thousands of young people around the world. Each step is self-directed, and connects your passion to your community’s needs.
In the first step of the Roots & Shoots journey, we want you to get inspired to make a difference. On your journey of inspiration, you’ll learn about Jane and be inspired by stories of young people making a real difference in their own backyards.
In order to make your community a better place for people, other animals and the environment, you need to first understand who lives there and if everyone’s needs are being met.
It’s now time to determine which community issue you’re going to tackle and design and implement a plan to get it done!
In the final and very important step of the Roots & Shoots journey, celebrate all that you’ve accomplished for animals, people, and the environment.
